Biography
Mitchell Farquharson is an organist, pianist, and teacher based in Cornwall. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Organists and currently holds the Organ Scholarship at Truro Cathedral.
Between June 2024 and August 2026, Mitchell was the Sub-Organist & Assistant Master of the Choristers at Godalming Minster, accompanying the regular choral services and other special services, as well as directing the choir in the absence of the Organist & Master of the Choristers and mentoring other organists at the Minster.
From September 2023 until August 2026, Mitchell also held the position of Head of Organ Studies & School Organist and Academic Music Teacher at St Catherine’s School, Bramley. In this role, he was the principal accompanist to the weekly and special services. He was also responsible for coordinating and overseeing the organ curriculum for the Jennifer Bate Memorial Organ Scholars and the organ students at the school. Many of his students have gone on to attain high examination results and secure scholarships at Oxford, Cambridge, and in London. He also took a leading role in the organisation and running of the annual Jennifer Bate Organ Academy and led a masterclass for participants on the course. As an Academic Music Teacher, Mitchell taught across the senior age range from Key Stage 3 to Key Stage 5, delivering lessons on a wide range of topics and writing a number of the School’s schemes of work.
During the 2022/2023 academic year, Mitchell was a Resident Graduate Music Assistant at Wells Cathedral School, with specialisms in academic music, theory, and accompaniment. In January 2023, he became the Lead Resident Graduate Music Assistant and took on additional responsibilities in organising the GMA team, managing rotas and scheduling, and providing administrative support to the Music Department and staff. He accompanied the School’s Chamber Choir on their tour to the International Choral Festival of Preveza in July 2023, where they were awarded a Gold Medal and placed first in their category.
As an organist, Mitchell has studied under Stephen Farr, Frederick Stocken, David Titterington, Richard Carr, and Daniel Moult. He has held the Organ Scholarship of Chichester Cathedral, the E. H. Warrell Memorial Organ Scholarship of King’s College London, and regularly deputised for choral services at Wells Cathedral in the absence of an Assistant Organist. Through these positions, Mitchell has performed in venues across the country and beyond, including St Paul’s Cathedral; Winchester Cathedral; Southwark Cathedral; Christ Church Cathedral, Dublin; Salzburg Cathedral; Dorchester Abbey; and Smith Square Hall. He has also performed alongside notable ensembles, including the London Handel Orchestra and the Deutscher Chor London, and appeared as the soloist for a performance of Poulenc’s Organ Concerto in the Chapel of King’s College London. He has been featured playing on Sky Arts TV, on a BBC Radio 3 Choral Evensong broadcast, and on a recording project of Kerensa Briggs' choral works released in May 2023 under the Delphian recording label.
Mitchell read for a degree in Music at King’s College London, graduating with First-Class Honours (including Firsts for his final recital and composition portfolio), as well as undertaking a King’s Undergraduate Research Fellowship on the music of William Alwyn. In November 2022, he was elected to become an Associate of King’s College London.
